VST Plugin List Question..

You know the list, when you go to open a VST?

Is there any way humanly possible to clean up that list?
I have a few doubles in there, and also a couple VSTs which have been removed from the computer, but still show up on that list.. It is terribly long and I want to downsize it..
I am not talking about the quick list, I mean the one after you chose More on the drop down list..

I have about 25 that are doubles, because I moved copies of the .dll files into a folder to separate the ones I wanted to use in AA.. So then when I refreshed the list in FL, I got the doubles of all those..

Here's hoping all is well with all..

And if anyone can help, it'd sure be 'preciated..

I was just wondering if you guys could point me to some "For Dummies" stuff on FL. I've been dj'ng for a few years now and would like to produce my own tracks. I've tinkered with FL 5 for almost a year now and basically I've just been using it to produce beats with the standard VSTs and samples that came with FL.

I'm a noob and I need a guide...

Thanks.

Sine modulation FX plugin

Afternoon all.

OK, so you know how the latest versions of FL Studio have re-introduced the old precomputed legacy effects (eg. Amp, Reverb and Sine FX)? For me its awesome, because I really love the Sine Modulation FX.

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge these Sine FX knobs can't be automated because they are precomputed, and so the sound cuts out every time that you adjust a dial.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on a sine modulation FX plugin, which would allow me to get these weird sine sounds that FL Studio offers, but be able to automate it too?

I've heard this kind of effect used by artists such as The Orb, Hallucinogen, Shpongle and Younger Brother, and I really wanna get this sound in my own tracks, as it can be nice and trippy if done properly.

I spent a couple of hours scouring the net last night, but had no joy. If anyone can help, please do let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks.

hi! i just got my oxygen 8 v2 today! i connected it to my pc and installed the drivers... so it should work. i opened fl studio 7 and tried to connect a channel by right clicking on the field where you can choose the mixer track for this channel and then went to "link to controller".
i then hit some buttons on my oxygen 8, but nothing happened...
how do i connect a channel to my oxygen 8 v2?
thanks!
greetings max

PC and MIDI keyboards control channels in the sequencer instead of pitches?

I am _not_ a noob (lifetime subscription to FL since 1999 or 2000), but this one has me completely stumped. In fact, I have started opting NOT to use FL at all due to this limitation. I just cannot get keyboard keys or MIDI keyboard to control PITCHES instead of playing a C4 in each channel in the step sequencer.

I have tried with the channel selected. I have made sure keyboard-to-piano is on. I have tried closing the stupid sequencer altogether. It STILL goes through the channels instead of pitches in the selected channel! WTF??? I don't want to hear drum samples as I play my keyboard. I want to control one single 404 channel when I play it.

In case I am not being clear about the issue, here is what I mean:

TS404 in channel 1
Kick drum in channel 2
Snare drum in channel 3

I type "z" and the TS404 plays its C4.
I type "x" and the KICK DRUM plays its C4
I type "c" and the SNARE DRUM plays its C4

But, I want::

I select the TS404 channel 1
I type "z" and the TS404 plays its C4
I type "x" and the TS404 plays its C#4
I type "c" and the TS404 plays its D4

Help???

Raymond.

Beat Compendium

I'm trying to build a database of basic beats. Most of these are the beats that define a genre, most notably the Amen break and the simple kicks that have made everything from disco to house/trance. I found a site that lays out quite a few popular D&B beats in other programs, but nothing for a simple beat sequencer or Fruity's piano roll.

I don't mind learning them by directly listening, but it would help if somebody has already done some of the footwork. Anybody interested in collecting them into a single place, like another site? OR THIS MESSAGE BOARD?!

BAD Crack! (not the smokin' kind)

Ok i recently re-installed my os 2 times.

the first time i saved all the drivers on another hard drive and completely re installed windows and then put on a L3 multimax crack package from H20 which i had been using for some songs in FL.

the munite i put on the crack, FL and some other progs on my PC began to lock forcing a hard reset about every 20-90 munites sort of at random. I also recieved Blue screens of death during use.

i then repeated the steps of re-installing windows and all drivers and software but did without the Crack from H20,

now locking is very rare, and when it does lock it closes FL returns me to the desktop and error reporting service on windows comes up.

i can now at least rely on much fewer crashes mabey 1-4 / week and they are not requireing a re-boot.

if anyone has inexplicable problems of this sort I would suggest removing any crack-ware from your computer.

I have heard that the reason this occurs is due to the method with wich crackers make their software. it is tough to get all the copy protection out especialy if it has to do with a patch for a USB dongle which is the case with the L3 and others.

I only wish i could afford the L3 which by the way costs about 2000 dollars.

does anyone know a comprable plugin that is avalible for free?

I am interested in starting a thread on here.. But I need somewhere to upload my music to.. Thanks for any suggestions, and show us what you got!

I'm working for a production company in NY, I can't really talk about it due to non disclosure agreements, BUT I would like to take "fruity loop" lessons, or possibly work with another producer in the NY area, who would receive executive production credit for the tracks (being used by well known artists). The posts seem to stay clear of hip hop, but I am assuming that is not because of any bias, just personal preference. I’ve used fruity loops since it came out, but I’ve been bouncing around from sequencing with cubase/nuendo, protools, MPC’s…etc., but honestly, fruity loops is the truth and I would like to perfect my skills. The lessons WILL be paid…money, trees, gear, software…if you are nice at what you do, we can work something out. If think you are the best in NY, let me know what you have to offer, and we will schedule a meeting at the company office on Wall St.

How to Render Loops for Mastering

My CD is almost done and I want to send it off for mastering. Does anyone know the best way to accomplish this task?

I was informed that the Place where I send the masters to, require me to render each part out as a wav file. I can do this, however I have a few questions.

Is there a "render all" function for this type of process?

I know Fruity can render a song as a regular wave file...but it also can render it as "tiny slices" or how I refer to it as the fine tooth comb. Obviously this takes a really long time to get it to do this. Is this necessary if I am already sending it to get mastered? I don't want to waste my time with something that will already be done. And I am not that sure if Fruity's "tiny slices" rendering is worth the wait.

I have a song that is let's say 30 patterns. The patterns consist of samples, vocals, pads, drumm loops, and varied percussion. Now, I am thinking it's not feasable to render a song into 30 parts like that, as it would take too long, be a mastering nightmare, and the end results would be one songs parts wouls span over 3 CD's. Obviously this is not the way to go. I am thinking I may have to combine some of the patterns. Am I in the correct thinking here and what is the bast way to accomplish the correct combinations?

Any responses/insights would be helpful. Thanks

Hey Pedro,

I just downloaded a side chain gating plugin because i want to do frequency controlled gating (and compression, for what that's worth)

it says this:

GT Sidechain Gate 0.8
Simple sidechain gate effect. It has two stereo inputs (the second is for the key input) so will need a host with flexible routing possibilities

Would you know how to route this in Fruity Loops? If anyone knows, you would.

Breakbeat Editing Question

Okay, so one of the techniques that I used a lot w my old hardware/sampler based setup was to chop up beats in recycle. I would then sequence them in my workstation. My workstation had the ability to assign all the individual edits to one track where any edited beat would cut the last edited beat off. By doing this i could vary the length of my edits and there would never be any annoying overlap of edited beats. Essentially my drum tracks would be monophonic. This is super useful in dn'b. I've been using fl5 for about a year now, and I can't figure out an easy way to do this. I use FPC all the time, but it doesn't always seem to do this, even when the channel is set to mono. Is there a trick to do this effectively and easily?

There's a great thread on Glitch techniques and VST instruments that accomplish it at the Electronic Music Production tribe

http://studioanoraks.tribe.net/thread/55cbf935-aa11-42e1-b50d-692d07bd9ad3?r=10513

I have learned a ton from my fellow computer music producers through this thread. It's worth a read.

But here is the collation of all the VST instruments that they recommend, most of which are free:

GLITCH VST effects

and for the MAC side:
It looks cool but I haven't tried it out yet.

I am always guessing what exactly I should have in my master channel for mastering a song...as FLP seems to have all the tools to make a song song really nice...with the correct mastering.

I normally use a compressor (on drum preset) and a limiter (and pull it down to where it's not peaking.

NOOB Questions...

okay...so i'm new to fruity loops (and pretty much all programs like fruity loops) and it's taking me a while to learn the ropes. i know how to take the samples and put them together to form a beat, etc... but there are a couple of burning questions that i have:

1. now that i've recorded a .wav and imported it to FL...how do i get the drum beat that i've created to sinc up?

2. is there anyway to have a playback of what i already have made in FL while i record a .wav file at the same time?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

What do you use Fruity for? What is your studio set up?

I use it pretty much for song creation. It has been proably the main tool I use for that. I have used it in Live situations, but it clearly isn't the correct tool for that.

Right now my studio is my computer and a midi keyboard. Full on with my musical partner...I run FL Studio for beats and some other sounds, while he lays samples down on top with effects. We have also had singers sing on top of creating the music on the fly...which FLP is great at doing.

at one point I opened a tutorial on the vocoder
and ever since, when I open up any Fruity Loops or drag an existing
.flp file onto it, the same damned vocoder tutorial comes up first.

It's driving me nuts. Anyone know how I can tell Fruity Loops to open
up a blank template or one of my own customizing when I open it up?

I've looked all throught the options and can find nothing.

I feel like a 'doh' person lately with this program.

thanks for putting up with me.

I need some advice about remote keyboards and FLStudio

I can't seem to get my Oxygen keyboard to play softsynths or
change FX parameters in FLStudio.

the manual shows this page but, try as I might, I cannot seem to find out how to access it. I"ve right clicked fucking everything that has anything to do with midi control to no avail............any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

here's what the help menu says:

AUTOMATION & RECORDING

Live Recording Using MIDI Controller
During a recording session, you have to move the wheels and sliders in FL Studio' interface to automate their movement. However, if you own an external MIDI controller, you can control all these controls from it. If the device you use can also send note events (usually these are MIDI keyboards), you can use it to record melodies in FL Studio (see MIDI Settings for various options concerning keyboard input). To use your MIDI controller/keyboard in FL Studio, first ensure you have selected the proper driver in the Remote Control Input combo box, located in the MIDI Settings page. Then check if the Enable MIDI Remote control option is enabled in the Options menu.

Linking control to MIDI device
Right-click a control to be linked and from the menu that appears click Link to Controller. The Remote Control Settings dialog appears.

MIDI Controller:

I've got FLStudio 5.0
and am working on a new tune.

It is 110 bars long so far but when I try to render it
either as a .wav or as an .mp3 the rendering gets to
about half way and suddenly slows way down and eventually
stops.

I'm only running one VST effect but it was doing this before
I added it.

does anyone have any idea what the fuck is up?

I'm going to be devastated if I can't finish this puppy.

Is it the Drivers or FL?

I tend to believe it is the drivers 50% of the time and FL the other 50%

Reason # 1 FL Locks When Rendering
When FL Renders a wav file it is not Using the device driver to do so, instead it is routing what would be sent to the driver to it's internal wav writer. Any locks must be caused by FL alone.

Reason #2 Drivers DRAMATICALY effect FL
Upon Re-Installing FL, Windows, Firmware, Bios, IRQ settings over 15 Times one thing remains constant FL Randomly Crashes LESS if you have better drivers.

Help!!!!!! FL 5.0 acting very strangely

My copy of Fruity Loops 5.0, just started acting very funny.

All of the plugins that I had picked suddenly were unchecked
and now when I create a new channel, there is no longer a long list
of things to choose from.
Notably missing is a midi channel.

Has anyone had this problem?

Any advice? I've really customized it a bunch so I don't want to clean install the program, but this not having midi sucks donkeys.

Pete? Anyone?

when you're buiulding up a house pattern from a stab and some hats, drop the snares for a bar while you filter a pad, then drop a distorted + reverbed clap at step 13 of 16, cut all channels at step 14, then stutter the bass off-timedly from 14-16 and then at the next measure bring in your kicks, snares, hats, pads and bass.

it works.

Hey how do we transfer the regestration code (from a box version) to a new person and so that person can create their own user ID. So one person looses the rights to use it and the other gets complete ownership of the copy. Thanks a bunch

When plugin interface is too big.

I am wondering if anybody knows how to deal with plugin interfaces that are too big for the fruity desktop. There seems to be no scroll feature in the wrappers. Is there a way to resize a wrapper window so that a scroll bar appears. I never can get to the bottom of certain plugin interfaces.

Anybody deal with this before.... or is this just a bug that never got fixed?

Hi, I'm running FL 5 using the Echo Layla... one problem I've been having is that I can't use the built in sound editor to edit a sample. I always get the error box telling me that my MMX device is already in use ( I assume it means by FL itself).

Any suggestions?
Hey there - I'm just wondering how everybody sets up fruityloops when starting on a project.

Do you change the number of beats in pattern for instance?

Are there default effects and settings that are "must haves" that you start with .... etc?

Or is it just a function of the project at hand, and every one is different (obviously they are different) enough not to set defaults?
PURPLE HAND released

Since I used FlStudio producers edition (and most recently, v 5.0 of Fruity Loops) for almost the entire CD (not entirely), I thought it apropos to mention this little piece of personal spam:

I wanted everyone to know that the Abstract Electronica CD that I've been composing for in the last two years has been completed and is officially out.

Featuring 21 tracks, PURPLE HAND has more groove on it that previous CDs that I've put out and I am proud to have designed or heavily tweaked virtually ever sound on the CD myself.
I also agonized over what to finally include and culled from 305 minutes of completed tracks that I've written for it specifically in the last two years of my life.

I've also decided to split my music into two different projects:
PURPLE HAND will be my Abstract Electronica project from now on
and
L()()p.p()()L will continue to be my Live Looping project.

I'll be selling the CDs myself for $15 apiece including shipping and handling to the US and Canada but for the members of this tribe I'll sell it for $10/CD for the next month just to thank you for your support and interest.

You can just send a personal check with a return snail mail addy to:

PURPLE HAND
412 Darwin Street
Santa Cruz, California
95062-2629

if you are interested.

thanks everyone for your support of my artistry. I make all of my living from being a creative artist and , as you well, know, it is exceedingly difficult to do that in this day and age and economy so any financial support is greatly appreciated and keeps the wolfs of the economic realities of life at bay.

I also want to thank the support of my sponsors:
Gibson (for the fabulous EDP Echoplex), Cycling '74 without whose PLUGGO plugins I could have never made this CD, Ableton's LIVE, Antares (for the incredible voice to synth software KANTOS), Bias for their Peak sound editor on Mac OSX, Ms. Piggy (for scratching any sound in my computer with a turntable), Augustus Loop, Bob Collier for his custom Kalimbas and Dror Sinai of Rhythm Fusion, the best percussion store on the planet for all of his generosity.

I only endorse things I truly believe in so I can give an enthusiastic 'two thumbs up' to all of these wonderful and truly innovative companies.

So, I checked out the FL site and they say FL 5 is available, but the Tucows mirrors have FL 4.5.2 posted. At least, that's what it *says* but the actual file name downloaded is "FLStudio5_install.exe" so I'm pretty darn confused. And I'll tell ya', the FL site itself is not a lot of help. Very slow, conflicting data on various pages. There should be a single page with FL Studio 5 info including the download links. Looks like the programmers have outpaced the documentation once again. ;-)

I AM PLANNING TO PUT up a website that has a shitload of goodies.
What I will do for now is out some files on the net through sharenetworks. You can manipulate them for your own songs. I don't care In fact I will put some fruity loops files up as well, so you can break them up, and add your own touches. If your on warezp2p, you can get some now.
the new production hints thread

you use fruity. you use it a lot, in fact. maybe too much, sneaking beats in when you should be working, or doing homework. sometimes, you start to think it may be a problem -- and then you discover something that blows your mind for another 4 hours, and then the sun's up and you have to be at work, with ringing ears and a numb expression on your face.

share your discoveries or tricks here. i'll start:

* to slice a break up to tempo:
- take an apache, for example. load it into slicer. hit play till end.
- put a one-measure note of slice one on the piano roll
- put a clap (or whatever) on 5 and 7 in the pattern sequencer
- adjust the key by right-clicking on the keyboard below the sampler, left raises pitch, right lowers it, until the snares in the loop hit at the same time as the claps
now your loop is keyed to the same tempo as the song, works for any break, any tempo just so long as it has more or less regular snares or somethign to judge by

* to give your breaks punch,
- bring the decay down on the front panel of the slicer window (dosent work well with all breaks).. if you use the volume envelope in the INS tab of teh slicer, it will apply that volume envelope to the midi-note, which will cut the loop short if you're using play till end.
- send it to a new mixer channel by clicking on the top left corner of the instrument window; start with an overdrive at about 40% wet, 70% drive, and then adjust the gain to flavor.
- add a compressor, drums preset
- add parametric EQ. i start with the snare enhance preset and work from there but there's gotta be something better.. what EQ curves do you guys prefer?
- add a send delay with a delay of 8 beats, and on a couple of your break patterns, bring the amount of send up to catch the last snare, and then break down.

* for gabber kick drums, start with the 3x0sc preset kick 4.
- SVF LP X2; res to 100%, cut to 0.
- go to your cut envelope, bring A, H, S, R, all to 0, bring decay to about a 45 degree angle, and apply maximum tension (curve)
- bring your volume envelope out to about 40 degrees.
- EFX: overdrive, distortion, compressor (drums preset), filter. edit events on the filter cutoff knob, draw a diagnoal line starting at the top when then kick hits, going down and to the right to hit zero right before the next kick hits. experiment with this and different lengths between the kicks
- to add a little creepiness to the drums, set up a send with a filter before a reverb; set the lowpass to full and the high to zero, set it to drum room or the venue or something, the filter the reverb in and out. this works pretty good if you bring the cut all teh way up dramatically right before the last kick before some silence.

i'll add more later.

How'd ya do that, Fraktured?

In the changes you made for fuguefordrums, Fraktured
I'm looking at one thing you did in the sample called
AMEN 1 (pattern #11).

In the 64th note before the 'and' of beat one, you have sample #35 sliced into four even slices.

The quantize on the piano roll grid is set to what looks like
64th notes (this would make your slices 256th notes).

How did you do that? Using the individual slicing tool (the the little exacto knife icon) I can't seem to accomplish this
and the official quantization doesn't go down that low.

What am I missing here that is obvious.

I'm so in love with slicing.............didn't Pete just say something like that and I WANT TO SLICE THINNER!!!!!

Can you help me out.

Cool piece guys, by the way.

the new Found sound.. Data come play with me!

Well.. I've decided to exploit yet another medium to find fresh sounds.. the medium of data.

This track is compiled completely of pieces of sound from the raw data of a picture of a guys dog.

http://www.failedutopia.com/music/ihatejacksdog/ihatejacksdog.mp3

The plugins used are available in FL Studio natively and also from http://www.smartelectronix.com .

here's a list of the smartelectronix plugins used:

Bram's SupaTrigga and Bouncing Ball Delay
DFX's Buffer Overide, and Transverb
Magnus's Ambience..

Other plugins used should be in your version of FL Studio.

This track is very basic, but we can all fix that can't we ;) ?

Do NOT add any sounds except those found by extracing RAW data in your wav editor from the picture included in the *.zip file.
I found a guy recommended by a music store who said he would tutor me for a modest price, but I had to wait until he was finished with some other projects. 2 patient months later I book him and he says "Oh I thought you meant QBase, sorry can't help you."

I've got guitars, Tascam 4 track casette recorder, mikes etc and FL Studio 4.5.2.

Can anyone tell me how I can get audio into FL Studio so that I can start working on my songs. I don't mind buying books or whatever it takes, I just want to get started.

If someone can point me in the right direction I will be eternally grateful.

CONTEST:
intended to test the contestant's ability to be creative within arbitrarily strict constraints.

1. constrain by time: 30 minutes after opening the file, save your results as a .zip file in fruityloops, and post it back to this thread. if you open the file and modify it in any manner, you must post results.

2. constrain by source: you may use no presets, no quantization, no arpegiation, and no loops or samples that came pre-installed with any software.

3. constrain by medium: the original file is in fruitystudio 4.5.2, the latest version, zipfile format, so you will need that to open it. post your reply in same.

4. constrain by intent: the purpose of the contest is not to make a perfect track, it is to become a part of a collective cartography of the creative process in this particular slice of time. therefore, it is important not to think heirarchically but sequntially -- think of it not as composing music, but as yoga for the computer-user interface, so be limber and nimble.

5. constrain by arrival: you must use the MOST RECENTLY POSTED ZIP FILE as your starting point. if you don't like the MOST RECENT ZIPFILE in this thread, wait till another one comes up.

6. constrain by enthusiasm: play to win and love the game. come proper or not at all.

if you don't have the capacity to post files to your own webspace, email me (meatsock at gmail) and i will post it for you.

good luck.

I'm a fruity loops user, heavily. I've been using it for 3+ years now and have been with it through it's and my own musical evolution. Do you guys find that when people hear that's how you're making music they tend to not take you seriously? For instance I've given CD's to people and they say, OMG this is great! and then they ask what I use, I skirt the issue and say oh random software. Then they ask again and I say fruity loops and they are like.. "oh..."

Let's share unusual sound design tricks in FLStudio (Fruity Loops)

oooh, I stumbled on a new random technique in Fruity Loops

A 12 year old computer sound design student of mine discovered a technique in the piano roll that I have never known. i started using it and expanding on it. here it is.

I'll post an mp3 at the audiopluginjunkiesannonymous@yahoo.com
group under the files section so you can hear it.

Here's what I did:

take a sound and send it to the slicer channel.
now slice it into 32nd notes

now move to the right and select stutter (fourth).

now open up the piano roll and expand it.

What has happened is that it has taken the wave file, sliced it into 32 parts (this is awesome with a longer ambient .wav file) and then sliced each of those into four equal parts
(that's right folks, you know have gated 128th notes!)

Now the fun begins. I just go in with the pencil tool and randomly grab one or two out of every group of four notes and place it randomly on the piano roll).

With an ambient sound you still hear the whole sound but it is glitched in a really cool and organic way. The skeleton of the sound remains.

Does this make sense?

It's hella cool.

Let's share some other techniques for sound design possible inside of FLStudio (fruity loops).

Contrained Randomness in Fruity Loops Programming

I wrote this in response to a thread at the other fruity loops tribe (and why don't we just consolidate the two, there are so few of us) about grabbing groups of notes in the Piano Roll and moving them randomly while fruity loops is playing (miraculously, it will play everything in real time and in rhythm.........a great random improvising device

I'm so in to random proscesses lately............and then the rigid constraining of the results in composition.

I watched flocking birds and swarming ants for a few weeks, fascinated by the way that they always keep a certain distance between them (so the flock or swarm looks organized) but also noticing that there was a tolerance for how close or far they would get from each other.

Yet when flocking birds turn the distance between them increases and then diminishes once they are pointed in one direction.

There is a certain amount of chaos and a certain amount of constraint built into their flight patterns.

Then it occured to me that this is probably true of all natural things. Their is a certain amount of entropy
but never complete entropy and a certain amount of disentropy but never perfect disentropy.

I surmised that this was a way of making electronic music more
'organic' sounding............the introduction of 'constrained' random elements. I wondered, not being a programmer whether one could write an algorythm with constrained randomness built into sequencing.

LOL, then I found out that this is all old hat and had been looked at long before before I 'discovered' it on my own.

These natural patterns are called BOID algorhythms. There are even some people who have attempted to program them into
Max/MSP patches , though I haven't worked with them.

Just imagine a midi generating program (or midi cc generating program) that would allow for statistical but slight variation.
As the flock turns (or as we come to a transition in a song)
the statistical variation (or randomness quotient) could widen slightly.

I, myself in Fruity Loops make great use of the drop down bars that let us change the volume, cutoff, resonance and shift
parameters. If you just use this using high hats and put a minute, but random, amount of change in each category, you will create really realistic sounding hi hat patterns.

Being a trapset drummer, I realized that you could simulate the difference in a drummers two hands by making most of the alternate (or left hand strokes) be a teensy bit quieter, a teensy bit cutoff, a teensy bit less resonance and a teensy bit late in the shift category.

Make it so that you can barely percieve each change and the overall effect is constrained imperfection: a drummer
who has good time but is not perfect.

is anyone aware of an app. even remotely as convenience as Fruity that will run on the MacOS? i've recently started a new job with a 60 minute commute by train and i'd love to spend the time with a laptop and headphones working on audio. i'm loathe to drop yet more money on yet another Windows machine that i know i will hate, but i love Fruity too much to just completely abandon this style of sequencing.
and no, i don't think Fruity running via the Windows emulator under MacOS is a good solution ;-)

So I'm still running FL3 and I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the Studio version. Are there things in the Studio version that were lacking in FL3 that you just can't live without? Is it worth the price of the upgrade (I think it's about $69 which isn't too bad).

I was interested in purchasing a bass ocarina, because I had heard a great middleeastern player playing a huge
gourd one whose sound was really deep and mysterious.

Anyway, long story short I downloaded a few examples and took
an MP3 of the german song 'Edelweiss' and started
chopping it up randomly in Sound Forge and processing it through different wierd VSTs that I have.

I then took each example of the mangling and put them into
Fruity Loops channels and set them so that they were each
at cut=1 and cut by=1 so that each track was mono and was gating whatever was played before it. This is one of my favorite tricks to use in Fruity Loops (another short piece
Chopitch Smackdown uses this technique with different cymbal bells---see below for where to hear it).

I then took some abstract electronic drum sounds and put them into the granulizer channels for a bit of mangling and put it up underneath my loop.

I really like how it came out (especially since it came from the corny old song Edelweiss---apologies to all older Germans on this thread).

I'll post it at the audiopluginjunkiesannonymous@yahoogroups
that I established for file uploading at the Audio Plugin Junkies Annonymous tribe here at tribe.net.

Let me know what you think of it if you download it.

Is it possible for one sample to gate another? For example, Id like to have the "open high hat" sample turn off when the "closed high hat" sample is triggered.

Using Fruity as a VSTi within Acid

Anyone else doing this? I was for a long time, to my great delight. Then I replaced my harddrive (the old one was failing) and after re-installing everything I find that I get memory reading errors when trying to close Acid (if the track I have been working on has Fruity as a VSTi). Neither Sony nor Fruity's support had much to offer, they all assumed there was something wrong with my system (which may be true). Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you solve it?

anybody here successfully use midi nrpns to control outboard gear in fl studio? i've tried and it seems to be a major pain. if anyone has any insight or help, i'd be thrilled. is there some vst plugin that might handle it better? for the record i'm trying to control a tr-303, an er-1 and an es-1. if anybody has done this, how'd you do it?

finally downloaded FL STUDIO

Because of some serious computer woes, I have owned the FL STUDIO producer version for some time but have been using an older version of Fruity Loops until tonight, when I finally got my old beast to start behaving again.

I finally downloaded the new version and had some time to work with it:

It is freaking amazing!!!!

They have built so many cool new sound mangling things into the program with intense automation possibilities.

Their beat slicer and granulator alone are worth the price of admission, because they have allowed all kinds of editable
approaches to the slicing and granulating including a wonderful
random feature in both devices.

I honestly can't say enough cool things about it. They've made it so that you can make individual patterns be different time signatures, you can use very long .wav forms that even though they are triggered in a one bar pattern keep playing over the repeating patters.

And you can chain any number of VST effects on any individual sound. I was coming up with the coolest sounds tonight:

I found a short erotic video clip that had really strange warbling flanging on it's sound track for some reason. I recorded it and then clipped out all the moaning and groaning, leaving the artifacts and breathe intakes to warble. Then I normalized them and sliced and diced them into some nice funky shit!!!!

I'll probably post an .mp3 of the results at the yahoogroups site that our Audio Plugins Junkies Annonymous Tribe has created so that we can share audio files with each other.
If you care to hear some stuff, sign up at
AudioPluginJunkiesAnnonymous@yahoogroups.com and
BE SURE TO CHECK 'recieve no E-mails'

There is no correspondance at the site, we are merely using yahoogroups for their file sharing ability. When I get back from my short tour of mexican/california border cities in a couple of weeks I'll post something.

Audio Plugin Junkies Annonymous - a tribal invitation to one and all

I just started a tribe I'd like you all to join
called the Audio Plugin Junkies Annonymous tribe.

I invited some of my favorite plugin designers and sophisticated digital audio pro buddies to join and we're
off to a sound mangling good time.

I also created a group called
AudioPluginJunkiesAnnonymous@yahoogroups.com

for the expressed purpose of having a place to upload and download files that illustrate different plugins or plugin techniques.

come join that too, if you'd like and please don't post there because I'm only going to absentee moderate it. It's just for uploading files because tribe doesn't have that capability.

Come on all you audio mangling junkies........we'll discuss
freeware, shareware and commercial plugins in all formats
(no Mac or PC or Linux bias here) and share techniques.

wanna trade samples? I'm looking for some idiosyncratic organ samples

I'm really looking for strange and unusual organ samples.
I was just listening to some Elliot Smith and Syd Barret (a bit of a disconcerting experience) and realizing that i love some of those quirky organ sounds from 60's records that are NOT the typical hammond B3, farfisa or normal church organ sounds. The more quirky and idiosyncratic the better but I don't mind just unusual organs as well or even synth organ
substitutes if they are in the same timbral spirit.

I have a great CD where I have assembled and categorized
hundreds of analogue synth, synthetic, electronic and drum machine drum samples. There are also a lot of real drums too
in categories by instrument. They are all .wav files but any decent sound editor can convert them to other formats.

I'd be interested in a straight trade. A CD of organ (and other keyboard samples for a CD of drum samples). I can process .wav and .aiff files but would have harder time with
proprietary sampler formats.

Please write me off list if you want to trade so we don't have to bore the folks at this tribe.

I'm at rickwalker@looppool.info

thanks a lot!

realistic drum programming tips

I just posted this (and an even longer post) to Loopers Delight tonight and thought
someone here at the fruity loops tribe might get something out of it.
Please forgive me if you already have figured some of this stuff out. I'll assume that
you are a relative newbie writing this:

REALISTIC DRUM PROGRAMMING TIPS part one: Hi Hats

I've been a professional touring and recording drummer for 25 years and
just thought I might share a
couple of really simple ways to use fruity loops or fruity studio to create
more 'realistic' drum patterns.

for what it's worth, try this out with Fruity Loops:

Take your hi hat tracks (are any tracks for that matter, including melodic
synth 'bubbles').

drop down the bar graph box that allows you to scroll between velocity
(volume), pitch, panning, cutoff, resonance and a thing called 'shift' which
allows you to use each of these categories to effect each individual note
that you've programmed. (note: this can be accomplished in other ways in
most of the good midi sequencing apps or software/hardware drum machines).

Drummers, no matter how good they are, just aren't perfect and we can use
the fact that each of these drop down bar graphs can make very, very small
changes in a sound to do some subtle things to a rolling drum groove like
16th notes on a hi hat.

Not all drummers, but many tend to favor their strong hand in a single
stroke (hand over hand) drum roll.
Consequently, if you make all odd numbered hi hats be slightly louder than
their even numbered hits it will sound more realistic. Start by making
velocity differences that are really clearly audible. Then lower the
velocity until you can barely feel the difference. We are going to make very
subtle changes like this on each of the parameters of velocity, pitch,
cutoff, resonance and, importantly, shift.

I can't stress enough that you should make these changes be so subtle that
you can hardly notice them.

Just going on the fact that the right handed players start their rolls with
the right hand and favor it ever so slightly (or grossly for effect as well)
means that the stroke will be harder with the right hand than the left hand.

When a percussion instrument is hit harder the difference between the
transient (or hi pitched attack) of the sound and the body of the instrument
(or the sound that comes after the attack) becomes greater. In general, on
drums, that means that a harder attack tensions the drum very imperceptably
(sp?) and it also means that there will be more treble in the sound.
Consequently, the pitch goes up a little teensy bit and their is more
attack to the sound (increased resonance and slightly higher cutoff
frequency).

Consequently, you can make the pitch of each right hand be just barely
noticeably higher, the resonance should be just one or two of those little
teeny bars higher. The cutoff should be just a few bars lower (allowing less
high frequencies through) on the 'left' handed or even numbered strokes.

Typically, if drums have time inaccuracies they tend to drag the left hand a
litte bit. I have to keep stressing that if you can hear the changes you
make, you aren't being realistic. You need to make the changes subtle enough
that you just barely feel that they aren't perfect. You can consequently
make each left hand note shifted one or two bars late.

Tigure out how much you can tweak each parameter before it becomes obvious
and then you can just randomly tweak each one
up to that limit. With a little bit of variance in each stroke from
parameter to parameter you will create more of a percolating texture
in your programming: This is a great technique to make synth 'bubbles'
(the kind used in techno and house) more interesting and less mechanical
feeling.

Now, you can avoid the biggest mistake that non-drummers do when trying to
write 'realistic' programs: Turn the overall volume of the hihats until you
CAN'T hear them and then slowly bring up the volume until you just begin to
hear them.

Professional producers have spent countless hours trying to figure out how
to gate and mix hihats OUT of tracks.

the reason is two fold:
1) Human beings have such a radical peak in their hearing around the 1-2khz
range (or the intelligibility range of human speech) that we can play the
hihats at incredible low volumes and they are still audible. You can't do
that with a bass drum.
I tell my drum students that you cannot play a hi hat or a snare drum so
quietly that a person sitting in a room with you can't hear it.
2) Hi Hats, the snare of snare drums and cymbals all seriously MASK human
vocal intellibility. How many people have gone to see live shows where they
can hear the singer is singing but can't for the life of them figure out
what they are actually singing. That is ususally because drummers (or mixers
, which is frequently the case) are not hip to this
important fact.

So, turn down your hi hat tracks (or any track with a strong mid range,
short envelope attack) and you have much more room for other musical goodies
in your mix. When in doubt, make your hi hats quieter than you think they
should be. Trust me, they'll come through the mix even at a quiet volume.

If you don't know this stuff already, try it out and send me a very short
mp3 of the results to me at rickwalker@looppool.info and I'll give you a
critique (time permitting).

later.
