Re: ask me questions here
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 3:47 PMDear Pete,
Is there a God? Whether or no, can you supply proofs? -
-
Re: ask me questions here
Thu, April 6, 2006 - 3:49 PMSeriously,
It is very kind of you to offer your knowledge up to us here in this tribe. Thanks a lot!
I've said it before, but I've yet to meet anyone who seems so down with this program.

Re: ask me questions here
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 3:30 PMrick your question depends on what you mean by the G word.
the proof is inside you.

Re: ask me questions here
Fri, April 28, 2006 - 2:08 PMrecorded automation goes into the pattern you had selected in the playlist when you hit record; so if the pattern is too short it wont record more than the length of that pattern.
hit f4 before you hit record, and make sure you draw that pattern in after.

Re: ask me questions here
Sun, May 14, 2006 - 1:37 AMHELP! Whenever I left click or right click on a channel/generator in the step sequencer, instead of seeing the properties of the channel or a rugh-clic menu, it just pops up a window wanting me to rename the channel. What am I missing here? -
-
Re: ask me questions here
Mon, May 15, 2006 - 11:18 PMmark, that's really wierd -- try making sure your mouse settings are correct, and make sure 'use both mouse buttons in step sequencer' is checked in general properties

Re: ask me questions here
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 11:51 AMWhen I play out a melody or whatever it may be, I record it into channel one.. Then any automation I want to do, I usually lay that down in channel 2, and record it in realtime, while playing the song, to hear the melody at the same time..
If I want to redo the automation, is there any way to clear what was recorded previously in channel 2?
I know I can record over it, but if the automation clip is 4 bars, and I want to re-record it as only 2 bars, it will still play the last two bars.. So is there some way to remove what was recorded completely before overwriting it? -
-
Re: ask me questions here
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 3:28 PMyou can use the cut tool in the playlist to cut patterns anywhere you like.
you can also go to the browser, and go to current project : automation : pattern 2;
and then edit from there by clicking on each automated parameter.

Re: ask me questions here
Fri, November 24, 2006 - 12:34 PMI have a noob question that I'm sure is simple.
I have over the years collected loops from many sources. I am looking at getting some better software and I wonder if my loops can be used in FL....like Garageband loops, Ejay loops, etc. I'd like to be able to bring them all along, you know? I also have dozens of Computer Music and Future Music magazine disks going back to '98 or '99 which are loaded with samples, loops, etc.
The other part of this question is can they be used simply? Or is there some conversion process that has to be done to certain kinds of loops one at a time? Etc etc. Thanks in advance :) -
-
Re: ask me questions here
Sat, November 25, 2006 - 1:41 AMIt depends entirely on what files are being used for your loops.
FL Studio uses .wav files
You have the option by left clicking the sound that you have placed in the Sample Sequencer (SS button at top of page)
to use your loops in loop mode or in one shot mode.
If your loops are in .AIFF mode (the files used by Mac musicians), then you will have to convert them to .WAV files.
Any decent sound editor (Sound Forge, Audition, WaveLab, Peak, et. al.) will be able to convert .AIFF files to .WAV files
with no loss of fidelity (that I"m aware of , at least). Furthermore, most current editions of those sound editors will give you the ability
to Batch Convert your files.
If you are a newbie to Fruity Loops, I suggest you spend a couple of hours by just moving your mouse over all the visual goodies
that appear on each page (their are five main page views: PL = PlayList (or the 'song' mode where you put patterns together),
SS = Sample Sequencer (which are the individual 'bars' or 'measures' of music that you program to then add together to make 'songs'),
SB = Sample Browser (which is where you store all of your samples that you will manipulate later), FX = well, Effects where you can put effects onto a single channel (by clicking the swirly button on the far upper left hand part of each mini sample editing page)and
PR = Piano Roll (which accesses a visual rendering of a keyboard so that you can tune your samples and record patterns that are longer than just one measure)
practise right and left clicking on everything and you'll discover tons of amazing functions that FLStudio has.
This software has just gotten deeper and deeper over the past three years and it is still incredibly intuitive and easy to use and
still ridiculously cheap compared to other things on the market.
I'm sooooo sad it is not available for the Mac, as there is really nothing equivalent to it on the Mac side of the world. As a sound design teacher, I'm always a little bummed when students come to me with Mac setups because we can't use this wonderful program -

Re: ask me questions here
Sat, November 25, 2006 - 10:29 PMawesome - thanks for the info!
btw - I solved the Mac vs PC problem a long time ago. I use a mac G5 tower for most of my work and play, and 120 degrees to my left is my windows workstation...problem solved! :-)

Re: ask me questions here > MIDI volume and Mod Wheel
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 6:59 PMTwo questions...
Preface - I'm sequencing/transposing (not sure of the correct word) some video game themes that have yet to be 'midified'. I don't have a midi keyboard and am simply 'drawing' the notes with my mouse, and this is fine. My goal is to create a .mid file, not to control a midi keyboard.
I'm using the Basic Midi Out generator on each of my channels, and all is well...
1 - Volume is very low and not even registering on the Peak Meter monitor. The Master Level is maxed, the Channel Volume control is maxed, the Attack on the notes are quite high, and my amp'd external system speakers are maxed. I want to avoid boosting my system volume for this. Or, is that the actual solution? All of my channels for the song are on Pattern 1, but the Mixer seems to not have any effect - Do midi projects not work this way?
2 - On a musical keyboard I can turn the Mod wheel and put vibrato on any given note. How do I instruct the Mod knob on the Basic midi generator to do the same? Is there a better Midi Out generator that I should be using? -
-
Re: ask me questions here > MIDI volume and Mod Wheel
Sat, October 27, 2007 - 12:10 AM1. well you're understandably confused; the midi out generator makes no noise. if you want to *hear* the midi notes you're drawing while drawing them, create a new VST object, and in the menu, select the thing that says something about 'midi in port' it's a green selector on the top right of the VST host window. set the midi in port to the same port as have the midi out generators, then you'll hear sound from that synth.
midi channels are not affected by mixer channels, since mixer channels are an audio processing deal, you're not doing any of that. to have midi channels show up in different channels in the output .mid file, change the channel number in the generator window.
2. well, the vibrato is going to a note generated in your keyboard, so what you need to do is link the mod wheel to a controller that you've configured in the midi out pane, then the controller data will pass. rtfm re: midi out

Re: ask me questions here
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 9:10 AMHello there fellow loopers!!!
My name is Alex and my musical alter ego is Phatcamp.
I've been producing electronic music (techno, breakbeat, ambient, dub, trip hop etc) since 1999, and have been using Fruityloops / FL Studio since 2001.
My current studio set up is an Acer Aspire laptop running FL Studio 7 XXL as my DAW, and Adobe Audition (for sample editing). I also use a Samson C01U USB condenser mic, an Evolution eKeys MIDI keyboard and an AKAI MPD24 MIDI controller.
I'm currently trying to get out of the studio and do some kind of a live gig. The AKAI is all raring to go, with various sounds linked to all the switches, sliders and pads etc.
However, the one BURNING question I have which is holding me up is ..................
HOW DO I SEAMLESSLY CHANGE BETWEEN SONGS IN A LIVE GIG ENVIRONMENT? Can it be done by simply pressing a button on the AKAI, or do I literally have to grab the mouse, close a song when it finishes and open a new song manually via File, Open, etc?
Surely there MUST be a way to do this?! PLEASE HELP!
Many thanks
Alex

Re: ask me questions here
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 4:18 PMYou'll have to render out a huge portion of your tracks into wavs and then compile them all together in a 60 minute "live act" file - with each of your (channel)tracks rendered out seperately or however you see fit. Then compose some transitions to make it all seamless.
Next, you will have to decide whether you want to sell out and just hit the play button and look like you're busy with EQ (not uncommon) or if you will actually do something live. Decide which elements you want to automate and port the vsti's or fx or whatever into the live act project file and map out the knobs or sliders or w/e to your midi controllers. The tough part is you will have to do some major copy and pasting and aligning - open 2 instances of FL and just export inport scores, synths, fx, everything, into your live act file that you may plan on automating live. Then link up knobs/sliders to your controller for everything you want to automate - it may be a good idea to use post-it notes or a sheet of paper to tell you what is all linked incase you forget. I would also do a full automation pass to get the default values/ auto in the live act that way if a knob or slider is bumped by accident it wont fubar how they should be on the synths.
The big alternative to this is to just dading into eao some on the fly mousework and just link your midi controller input on the fly - with FL this is thankfully easy enough - this trades off ease for more work on stage and more potential to mess something up - try to do this all in the most fail-proof way you can imagine and make notes for yourself
So you have to do all this (render to wav and port only what you want to automate) because of CPU usage, which shouldnt exceed 50 or so for stability and to keep headroom open for automation processing. the less cpu the better, and put everything you put into the channel rollout to "smart disable" to save more cpu.
This all is how I IMAGINE to do a live act with FL - its a lot of work no matter who you are or what you use, I'll emphasize that each person does it differently and finds their own way to do it (just like production) - also I dont have direct experience on a stage with this so dont trust me too much :) but if you dont know where to start - this should help. how elaborate and how "live" you can make this is up to you but at minimum all you need is the wavs crossfade into eachother in one big file and then hit the play button, and unfortunately quite a few people do this, then "look busy". -

Re: ask me questions here
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 6:39 PMThough Fruity Loops has some live capabilities, (and I love it do death and use it exclusively in
my composition), you will have your mind blown by looking into the program
Ableton's Live which will be a much , much better approach for you to do your live stuff
with a lot of real time customization.
In Live, you can have preset tracks that you can turn on or off at will but you can also
record, as an example, a guitar track over your tracks as they are running and then
when you finish your solo, you can grab it and throw it forward in the time line of your
piece and open up VST instruments that you can control in real time to affect the sound
of the solo you just recorded in real time. At the end of the night, LIVE has recorded
every single 'move' you've made so if you want to , you can go back quickly and cut out
that one chorus that you let go too long...............change the cutoff frequency of one
of your filters and burn it to vinyl the next day.
It's an amazing program. I don't even use it because I use hardware in my live looping show
but it is the only program I can think of (save using an AKAI MPC style sampler live) that will do
in a very fluid and sophisticated way , what you want it to do.
Compose your tracks in Fruity Loops and import them as loops or 'one shot's into Ableton's and take off.
ps there was a really good 6 page article on Live Looping featuring my approach to live looping (all improv) and Kid Beyonds' approach
(all composed and performed live) in the September issue of DRUM! Magazine if you can find a copy of it.
They explain Andrews' (Kid Beyond) live approach using Ableton's LIVE really well for a lay person. Check it out. -

Re: ask me questions here
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 11:48 AMDear Rick
As I just said to Booby Aerosis, thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for taking the time and effort to reply to my question. I REALLY do appreciate it. I've been looking for an answer to this for at least a couple of months now. You Americans sure know a thing or two about Fruityloops!
To start with , I'm definitely gonna try the "Aerosis Technique", because right now, not only am I being a cheapskate, but I'm feeling too lazy to learn new software.
However, as a good friend of mine is about to purchase Ableton Live, and the fact that the entire music production world absolutely RAVES about it, I can see that I may well end up moving in that direction in the near future. From what I understand it really is an incredible piece of software, especially for live gigs / live automation type work. I'd put money on me being an Ableton convert one year from now......
Many many thanks indeed, and as I said to Bobby Aerosis, God Bless America!

Re: ask me questions here
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 11:40 AMDear Bobby (Aerosis)
Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for taking the time and effort to reply to my question. I truly believe that you have solved the problem for me, and believe me, I have asked A LOT of people for help with this! I was even starting to think that maybe it just couldn't be done with Fruityloops.
Of course - bounce it all down to wav files and then put it all into one continuos track - why didn't I think of that ! Mate, you're a true genius.
It'll take me a bit of time to achieve, but will be worth all the effort I'm sure. Phatcamp live is on the way.........
Many many thanks indeed, God Bless America!

Re: ask me questions here
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 8:51 AMyou're partly right, but there's nothing stopping you from rendering a huge portion of your tracks into 2channel stereo mixdowns and firing those into abelton live.
i usually just generate about 20 minutes of ambient wierdo noisescapes per 10 minutes of live performance, and have them playing in the background as backup noise sources, then just open and close FL studio in the background
note that nothing's stopping you from having 2 or more instances of fl studio running, and swapping back and forth.
your comments of 'selling out' are bullshit and are indicative of someone who doesn't feel that the laptop is a real instrument. whether or not it is, when you're on stage, everything you do becomes the act, so just shut up about what's a 'real' way to use a computer, and don't get sad if you interpret this as meanness rather than sage and lucid advice.

Re: ask me questions here
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 9:08 AMHey Pete-
I started working with Edirol Orchestral VST in FL Studio 6. I have Edirol loaded into a channel. I have piano rolls, all of which have the Midi Out/Basic generator assigned to them. It's no problem assigning the Edirol instruments to the channels, than saving a OPE (Performance) file to save my instrument selections as a fruity wrapper - via the Edirol interface.
The problem is that every time I stop, or more importantly, start the song, Edirol resets to it's default instruments.
I looked around for answers and the only thing I found that seemed relevant is that there is a setting somewhere in FL or within the MIDI data that is telling Edirol to reset.
Any idea how to fix this? Ugh, need help make go.
Where do I send the Ramen? :)
Vince
vince@newinelabs.com
btw: Any chance you could send me the Tesseract file? I was trying to reverse engineer it to learn how to achieve the palm-mute technique he uses on the guitars (to no avail, it seems quite complicated??). I think I clicked a Layering/children button and saved the file. Now the guitars are gone. Can this be fixed? -

Re: ask me questions here
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 8:57 AMclick on the arrow next to the folder in the VST wrapper and the VST settings menu pops up. i've pasted the help file, peruse it and see if it helps.
it's very possible that Edirol Orchestral is just a piece of shit, i've heard other complaints about it.
Options
These features are provided to allow you to troubleshoot 3rd party plugins that don’t behave themselves inside FL Studio. Trial and error is OK if you must. Be aware that the default states are compliant with all plugin standards, so switching any of the following settings on may cause problems for plugins that conform to standards.
Send pitch bend range - When selected, the MIDI pitch bend range will be passed to the plugin. Plugins which support pitch bend range will respond correctly to host bend instructions. This is not selected by default as some plugins interpret pitch bend range messages as a filter reset message, causing problems.
Send loop position - Sends information about the song loop start and end positions to a VST plugin. This has to be calculated by the wrapper so it isn't available until FL has looped once.
Check current program on display change (VSTs only) - Some plugins send a display change message when a new patch (program) is selected from within plugin. This option allows FL Studio to detect the patch change and ensure data is correctly copied between FL Studio and the plugin.
Legacy velocity translation - For compatibility with projects created in versions of FL Studio older than 5.0. From FL 5.0 the method for calculating velocity of a note was improved. This should only be used if you are experiencing velocity issues with older projects, this may appear as incorrect volume, velocity-based filtering etc.
Process inactive outputs (VSTs only) - Some plugins mark one or more of their outputs as ‘inactive’ even though they are being used. By default, FL Studio doesn't process inactive outputs, so no sound is produced. This option ensures FL Studio processes ‘inactive’ outputs.
Rendering mode notify (VSTs only) - This ensures that the plugin is informed when FL Studio is rendering. Some plugins will automatically switch to a higher quality output when rendering.
Use fixed size buffers (all plugin formats) – FL Studio shares data with plugins using variable sized chunks of data (buffers). Some plugins require fixed sized buffers (which is outside the VST standard but supported in FL Studio for your convenience). This option ensures only fixed sized buffers are used. The disadvantage is that fixed size buffering introduces an extra delay, the delay depends on the audio buffer size selected in the Audio settings (F10). This delay is double for effects plugins. However, in some cases this setting may fix unwanted delays for certain plugins.
Save options for this plugin - Saves the options set in this menu so they will be remembered the next time the plugin is loaded.
Delete plugin options - Use this to clear the saved options for the loaded plugin type.
Automatically save plugin options - This is on by default, it automatically saves the options set in this menu so they will be remembered the next time the plugin is loaded.

Re: ask me questions here
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 7:03 AMHi Pete and co,
OK, so you know how the latest versions of FL Studio have re-introduced the old precomputed legacy effects (eg. Amp, Reverb and Sine FX)? For me its awesome, because I really love the Sine Modulation FX.
Anyway, to the best of my knowledge these Sine FX knobs can't be automated because they are precomputed, and so the sound cuts out every time that you adjust a dial.
Does anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on a sine modulation FX plugin, which would allow me to get these weird sine sounds that FL Studio offers, but be able to automate it too?
I've heard this kind of effect used by artists such as The Orb, Hallucinogen, Shpongle and Younger Brother, and I really wanna get this sound in my own tracks, as it can be nice and trippy if done properly.
I spent a couple of hours scouring the net last night, but had no joy. If anyone can help, please do let me know, I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks.
